Beware of scams
Yesterday I received an envelope with a check for $1975 drawn on The NewHaven Savings bank. Since there was no letter along with the check I
called the bank. The check had a payee named HBA. The bank said they are
no longer that bank and has been named two other banks for the past few
years. They don't have an account under the name of HBA. I then called fedex and was told that the name on the receipt was DW D, also known as
The Indiana Dept. of Workforce Development. This is their unemployment
center. They asked me to fax them all the information. Somehow their
fax machine is not working. All this happened because I answered an ad
for a mystery shopper. They said I would be paid for doing surveys for
department stores, restaurants. They said I would be paid $200 for every
survey completed. This morning I got an e-mail telling me to go to the
walmart and western union places i n my town. Purchase anything I want
take $50 for transportation and $25 for travel expenses. They then said
to send the balance (1900) to someone in california and do this by
going to western union and sending it by "money in minutes". Don't fall for any of their scams. This has been two hours and the DW D fax is still not
picking up.

I still haven't got the DW D fax to pick up. I wonder if someone
in their group is involved.

Re: Beware of scams
I had a friend who answered an ad in the local paper for a mystery shopper. The check she was sent was for 3000.00. Long story short, she didn't say anything to anyone, if she had she may have found out this scam had been in the news, went to the bank cashed the check, went to WalMart, took her 300.00 wired the rest WU and about two weeks later two detectives showed up at her door, the bank called the police on her for cashing a fraudulent check. The only reason she didn't end up in jail was because the teller never put a hold on the check, never checked the check as she should have because my friend didn't bank there, so this ended up being the banks fault for cashing the check and not following procedures.
If it seems to good to be true, it probably is is a good rule of thumb with these things.
About two years ago I had a man contact me through career builder asking me if I was interested in working with the stars. Long story short here, I live in the sticks and the only stars here are in the sky. I contacted the company he claimed he was head of HR for since they were legit and I was curious, he didn't work there but that was not known by me until the FBI came knocking at my door over it since the company reported my contact with them asking if he worked there and detailing what he had sent me. This was some new scam out of Russia where people were posing as HR from real companies and you can only guess what they were up to.

Re: Beware of scams
I get these stupid offers all the time in my spam box. About 2 years ago, a woman in the town next to me fell for it and was out about $900. The was an article in the local newspaper. She was also unemployed and had no way of repaying that money.
Fortunately for her, neighbors held fundraisers and donated the money to keep her out of jail.

I got an e-mail from the company yesterday
They e-mailed me yesterday asking where my evaluation of Walmart and
Western union was. I replied that I would send it when their check clears.
In the meantime the Indiana Workforce Development is working on it. I
hope they call the FBI. I'm still holding the check and all the info they sent
me.

Re: Beware of scams
The amount of scams out there is disgusting. You would think in this day and age, that this sort of thing would not exist.
One scam I get repeatedly get in my email box is one that says I am a beneficiary of some deceased womans will in Haiti or some place like that. It actually asks for my banking information so they can "wire" me my 10,000,000 bucks. LMAO
I report the email as spam every time I get it but it still seems to find its way into my inbox.

Re: Beware of scams
Yes, the ones that take advantage of unemployed people or old people etc., are despicable, but you know how everyone laughs at how stupid people are to fall for the Nigerian government embezzlement scam? Am I the only one who thinks that one's kind of poetic justice? If you weren't greedy and ready to steal somone else's money, ya wouldn't have gotten taken! Shame on you!
