I FINALLY give up
Just got off the phone for the LAST time with my rabid conservative friend. After 25 year I've decided that knowing this person was a waste of TIME. I have and been watching lately episodes of All in the Family and came to the observation that all the arguments and or social topics of then are the SAME as today. Different decades, different names, same problems, same old tired debate or I should say disagreement. Anyway I was just pointing out to him this observation and he went on to the It's ALL OBAMA's and Dems FAULT. Now this clod is 57, out of work almost 2 years and at the end of his UI. But he finally just out right called me the MOST stupidest person ever and that I DID NOT know how the world works. (Standard rightwing tripe). Everything in his eyes are all the Democrats and unions fault. He will not accept ANY idea of corruption, greed or any other sins on part of the GOP and their allies. Reagan was GOD and saved us all. BLAH, BLAH, BLAH etc, etc, etc.
Then he hung up. All this from a simple observation that in 1971 the same things that plagued us then does so now. Nothing has change except the wealthy got RICHER and the rest of us got poorer and screwed. Both sides are to blame on many levels. It's hard to talk to such a closed mind who BELIEVES there is a commie/socialist hiding behind every door and they are ALL Democrats. Granted Carter was a rotten Prez, Bubba had his issues, and Obama is weak but are they agents of the Anti-Christ bellowing from the pits of hell. No, but to heard this guy talk you'd think that 100%. Anyway I'm done with these fools who are friends that spout this rabid crap. Got no use for them anymore. This Neo-Con movement is a cult, it's the ONLY way to describe it. Mind controlled zombies being fed some subliminal messages in the media, just has to be. It's the ONLY thing that can explain it. When the welfare of the nation should be put into the hands of rich people to rule over poor people. That apparently is just OK with him. Then I mentioned the Koch brothers and thats when he hung up. RICH people GOOD, POOR people BAD....2 legs GOOD, four legs BAD. And I'm the most stupidest person ever, yeah right. My opinion or observations have NO value and when I try to state my position on it, it's devalued because I've been tagged already as STUPID, SOCIALIST, and DEMOCRATIC. I just keep in my mind thinking that he's just ONE yet there are millions of them out there just like him....and a COLD chill of terror crawls up my spine.

Re: I FINALLY give up
I have a friend like that, she live in Texas. she railed against socialism and all that just like your friend. When I told her that I believed in a safety net or a universal basic income for ALL whether one is working. She nearly went over the edge. She called me lazy and that I wanted to be taken care of and not work.
She kept using the word "personal responsibility" so many times, she said UI benefits was welfare. She said government was to blame for everything and corporations can do no wrong. She completely denied that their were no jobs or that the U.S has fundamentely changed since the "founding fathers". I told her that she worshipped "personal responsibility". She said if you get hit by a car and don't have insurance that is your fault.
I told her she could find herself homeless one day. She responded that "no that will never happen to me because I made good choices".
Unfortunately their are millions out there that think the way she does, and THEY VOTE , it is unfortunate for the rest of us with more progressive thinking that think that the economy should benefit ALL not just enrich a few. I'am afraid that will not change until that generation dies off and the younger generation votes more and gets more involved. Hate to say it that way, but it is the truth

It's sad, My friend is from Oklahoma. And not to stereotype (I lived in Okieland 16 years) but I found the Hee-Haw states really have lots of people like this. Hypocritical statements in one hand and a Bible in the other. Self-Righteous and closed minded to ANYTHING other than what their preacher tells them. What I find amazing is he's simply SOL in his situation and keeps following this tripe body and soul.

Re: I FINALLY give up
There are basic psychological reasons that these people feel the way that they do. Everyone projects their own personality on everyone else. They assume that if they would or would not do something that everyone else would do the same thing. So when your friends tell you that the unemployed won't get jobs because have benefits that means that THEY wouldn't look for a job if they had benefits. It's a common thing.
It's actually funny that you bring up socialism, I had a conversation with my cousin the other day. He works for the state. He mentioned that he was getting tired of paying for unemployment benefits with his tax money. I asked him how much he pays in health insurance and he said "nothing the state pays for it". I said, "you mean I pay for it with my tax money". After a few ummms he was pretty quite after that.

Re: I FINALLY give up
It's just amazes me, every conversation I ever had with him the LAST 2 years end in it's OBAMA's fault within the first minute of the conversation. I say "Did you see the gas prices today"....he responds....It's all OBAMA and the Dems fault for giving in to the Saudis. And thats just a SMALL example. And he doesn't hesitate to call you names if you don't THINK along his beliefs. The GOP is a bully mindset, just look at how they are bullying everybody lately. Life's too short and I don't like bullies.

Oh and another thing about compassion. When these kind of people WANT or need compassion, they yell, kick and scream for it but when they have to GIVE compassion they will make ANY and ALL excuses for NOT giving it.

Re: I FINALLY give up
Their is a disconnect from reality with these people. I told her you have no heart, and she AGREED. She basically does not care. I'am not in dire situation right now, but I could be, so I understand the plight of the unemployed.
We need UBI (universal basic income), it is time, their are millions of people that will never have jobs again. These people though (right wing conservatives) will block it, they ONLY CARE ABOUT THEMSELVES , it is pure selfishness in my opinion. No empathy for their fellow man.
If not UBI, government needs to provide shelter and food for these people in a form of voucher or something. This situation is unsustainable. More and more people are going to be on the streets including me if my husband does not get a job soon.
It appears that the right (conservative) and entrenching themselves even more in their positions. They are fighting the working people and unemployed tooth and nail, it is really scary!

Munster, I am on that front line with you brother and I definitely don't mind pushing back when I am pushed. Then you have the tea party fascists saying "cut all social programs except the ones that I use".
I firmly believe in my country and the country of my fathers and that it won't fall for this much longer. Wisconsin is living proof of that spirit and it's making people talk about these issues instead of just wishing for the next Bush.

I still say only when 70% are unemployed then and only then will they turn on their tripe peddlers and maul them.

My friend kept saying "the government is the problem" and "personal responsibility" every 10 seconds. That was her response to ever scenario I presented.
What is your opinion about UBI for these unprecented times we are living?

Our country should have UBI just like all European nations. This would basically equal unemployment benefits as long as you were out of work.
I hear exactly what you are saying. I even understand why some of these people feel the way that they do. For example, I COULD live the rest of my life on the benefits I get now. I don't want to but I could if I had to. I think a lot of people assume that I would if given the chance. It's funny about conservatives because they have snowed everyone for years. Everything that the American people hate liberals for doing are actually things that conservatives did to them and everything that they love about their country were achieved by liberals.
Higher taxes-conservatives
high health insurance premiums- conservatives
high national debt - conservatives
40 hour work week- liberals
civil rights - liberals
the constitution- liberals. (the founding fathers were the liberals of their day)
social security- liberals
medicare - liberals
free public schools - liberals.
I could go on...

sure, why not. I'm all for it. The problem is with rwingers is they WANT "HAVES" and "HAVE NOTS".
Whats to shocking is my friend is so screwed in his unemployed situation yet still pulls the golden idol of Reagan while being whipped for it and doesn't even realize it. I guess he'll have to be evicted, broke and living on the streets before he figures out his folly.
